Subaru Recalls 1.3 Million Vehicles in the U.S.

The recall is for issues in the brake lights.

Subaru announced a recall of 1.3 million vehicles across the U.S. on Saturday for issues in their rear brake lamp switch.

The company discovered the issue and ordered the recall voluntarily, according to Subaru's communications department.

The following models are affected by the recall:

  • 2013-2017 Crosstrek
  • 2012-2016 Impreza
  • 2008-2014 Impreza
  • 2014-201 Forester

There have been about 33 reported incidents of dysfunctional lights in the U.S. so far, according to Subaru. Since not every car uses the same brake switch, whether or not it is being recalled depends on the vehicle identification number.

While the rear brake lights were affected by the switch issue, this does not affect the function of the brakes themselves. The problem comes from when silicone seeps into the brake lamp switch, causing the switch to lose conductivity and the ability to illuminate.
