Swinging Our Way: Comic Con Palm Springs

The heat is on at this growing-ever-bigger pop culture meet-up.

WHEN'S THE RIGHT TIME... to curl up with a stack of comics by a favorite artist and writer? Answer: The time is always right. Of course, on days when we just don't want to be outdoors, due to the weather, the time gets a little righter. And the time is perfect, in August, for a pop culture-oriented extravaganza in Palm Springs, which can see some of its, um, sunniest days heading into Labor Day Weekend. And, yes, by "sunniest" we do mean "warmest," but be as bold as Iron Man and as undaunted as Wonder Woman: All of the action at Comic Con Palm Springs happens indoors, mostly, as is the way at our state's larger comic book gatherings. And Comic Con Palm Springs has been growing, drawing fans who are looking for a summertime spectacular just a month-plus beyond Comic Con. And it is...

QUITE THE SPECTACULAR, for a whole line-up of luminaries will show at the 2018 event. Lauded artist Jim Lee — he's created wondrous worlds for everything from "X-Men" to "Fantastic Four" — will be there, along with Bret Iwan, the official voice of Mickey Mouse and "My Little Pony" artist Agnes Garbowska. Panels, screenings galore, a zombie/cosplay walk, and other chances to suit up as your favorite superhero or fantasy figure are also plentiful at the Aug. 24 through 26 happening. And going on almost concurrently? The Palm Springs International Animation Festival, which brings the stories and on-screen wow to the desert from Aug. 22 through 25.

TRUE, TRUE, it is on the toastier side in the P.S. come August, which can make retreating to the Palm Springs Air Museum and the Palm Springs Cultural Center Theatre for animation screenings an extra delight. Plus, the desert is always delightful, in every season, and the pools of Palm Springs will be there for you, post-convention, when you need a cool-down from all of the hot comic action.
