“The King's Speech” Cleans up at British Film Awards

"The King's Speech" managed to gain even more momentum heading toward Oscar, dominating the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards.

The English historical drama took home seven trophies, including Best Film, British Film, Original Screenplay (David Seidler), Actor (Colin Firth), Supporting Actor (Geoffrey Rush), Supporting Actress (Helena Bonham Carter) and Original Music (Alexandre Desplat).

"Inception" and "The Social Network" both won three awards each, with "Alice in Wonderland" earning two to round out the multiple-award winners.

The BAFTA's historically don't have much predictive value when it comes to Oscar night, but this year's awards tally is another indicator of the fact the "The King's Speech" has supplanted "The Social Network " as the favorite. We wouldn't vote for either film, but we are glad that there will at least be some suspense when it's time to announce the top prize.
