“The Voice” Teams Shape Up

Second episode tops in ratings again

Let the battles begin.

"The Voice" built on its top-rated premiere episode Tuesday and maintained its status as the no. 1 network show.

NBC's singing competition scored a 5.6 rating in the advertiser friendly 18 to 49 demographic, up 10 percent from its premiere to trounce the competition, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The show's celebrity coaches emerged from week two of blind auditions having finalized a roster of 32 would be pop stars.

Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton each formed teams of eight.

Among Levine’s picks Tuesday were: a medical student who put his studies on hold to pursue his music dreams and a woman who was given another audition after first being unable to sway Shelton – her idol -- to mentor her. Angela Wolff's second chance came after coaches had run thorough all the talent who had come to audition without filling up their rosters.

Levine also teamed up with Twin Cities musician Tim Mahoney, but he said he was thrown for a loop by his blind audition.

“It’s gonna get a little weird for a second,” Levine said after laying eyes on the performer. “I thought you were gonna be a girl.”

“Forget You” singer Cee Lo Green also seemed shocked on Tuesday to discover a 36-year-old bearded Texan belting out his hit.

“Of course you have great taste of music,” he told the singer, Nakia.

Cee Lo made his own unconventional selection by joining forces with an unabashed country performer.

Christina Aguilera’s surprise moment came when she pressed the button for 16-year-old Raquel Castro, the youngest competitor of the show.

“I can honestly say…great things come in small packages,” Aguilera said. “You’re freakin’ cute.”

Blake Shelton, meanwhile, rejected two attempts by musicians to win him over with songs by his fiancée, Miranda Lambert.

Instead, he opted for “Hey, Soul Sister” performer Tyler Robinson on his team.

“I thought it was Drew Carey when I turned around,” Shelton said in surprise after the blind audition.

Next week the contestants will begin to be winnowed down in the first set of dueling duets.

Expect more celebrity musicians to join the fray, with Sia, Maroon 5 music director Adam Blackstone, Monica and Reba McEntire having signed up as coaches assistants.

Building on its impressive debut episode (which was watched by over 11 million people), "The Voice" actually grew with last night's episode, upping the number to well over 12 million.

It's the first new series on any network to actually get a bigger audience in its second week, NBC said.
