U.S. House Computers Blocked from Wikipedia for ‘Transphobia'

Wikipedia has blocked U.S. House of Representatives computers from editing the site because of controversial and offensive editing, according to reports.

This is the third time in the last three months for the ban on the House computers, with the latest offense being anonymously editing the Wikipedia page for "Orange is the New Black," according to The Hill. The House computers were detected by a common Internet Protocol address and banned on Wednesday. From the article:

The final straw came on Wednesday afternoon, when someone from the House edited the page for the Netflix hit show “Orange is the New Black” to change the characterization of an actor from “a real transgender woman” to “a real man pretending to be a woman.”
Someone using the IP address also seemed to be editing pages for "tranny" and other transgender pages and defended the comments as providing "fairness" and that it was "official business endorsed by a member of Congress."

The blocking only affects those posting comments anonymously. Those House staffers who make comments or updated the site using an account are exempt. The IP address was banned three times in the last three months for "disruptive editing."

The comments were considered problematic especially since legislators are responsible for crafting anti-discrimination laws.
