Zack Snyder Behind the Camera for “Superman”

Once he puts the finishing touches on his "Alice-in-Wonderland-with-machine-guns" fantasy epic "Sucker Punch," director Zack Snyder will be getting right to work on the new "Superman."

"I've been a big fan of the character for a long time, he's definitely the king of all superheroes, he's the one," Snyder told Deadline in confirming the reports of his own coronation.

"It's early yet, but I can tell you that what David and Chris have done with the story so far definitely has given me a great insight into a way to make him feel modern. I've always felt he was kind of awesome. I'll finish 'Sucker Punch' and get right at it."

"David and Chris" refers to screenwriter David Goyer and Christopher Nolan, the man who rejuvenated the Batman franchise and has been tasked with serving as "godfather" to the new Man of Steel.

Among those Snyder beat out for the job are Tony Scott ("Unstoppable"), Matt Reeves (his new film "Let Me In" is very good, but is being unfairly overlooked), Jonathan Liebesman (his "Battle for Los Angeles" trailer caused a bug fuss at ComicCon) and Duncan Jones ("Moon," and the upcoming "Source Code").

Though Jones may prove to be the best director of the bunch, Snyder is probably a better fit, having handled big budgets, special effects and superheroes in the past, and the trailer for "Sucker Punch" is amazing to look at. Snyder's current film, the 3D Australian owl saga "Legend of the Guardians" is in theaters, and while it didn't do terribly well, one of our colleagues enjoyed it.

You can expect "Superman" to arrive around December 2012.
