“Stupid Is As Stupid Does”

Pennsylvania "Gump" defendant must write phrase 1,000 times in plea deal

A Pennsylvania man who was ordered by a judge to write the Forest Grump phrase, "stupid is as stupid does" 1,000 times after rejecting a special probation deal for first-time offenders has relented and accepted the deal.

In June, Fayette County Judge John Wagner told 21-year-old Robert Mitchell Jr. to write the phrase after Mitchell refused probation and instead demanded a trial on charges that he fought and cursed at two state troopers during an October 2007 traffic stop.

On Tuesday, however, Mitchell showed up in court to accept the special probation, which likely will lead to his criminal record being expunged.

Judge Wagner says Mitchell had an "epiphany" that he previously made the wrong choice.  Mitchell and his attorney could not immediately be located for comment.
