Father Chased by Police Had Baby in SUV; Officer Injured During Shootout

Officers shot at a man after he led them on a chase from Long Beach to San Pedro Saturday morning with his baby in his SUV, authorities said.

The 5-month-old baby was not harmed in the chase, which ended in gunfire, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Officers initially received a call at around 2 a.m. regarding a domestic dispute and a shooting on East Rose Bay Street, with the suspect, a woman and the baby present at the time, a Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman said.

When officers arrived the man and the child were gone. Investigators believe he had the baby with him. The Los Angeles Police Department originally reported the call as an attempted kidnapping case.

The suspect returned to the location at around 3 a.m., police said, and when officers confronted him there was an exchange of gunfire, but the suspect escaped in his SUV.

"Next thing you know four to three shots fired. One hits the pole right by me," said Long Beach resident James Dejong. "I'm like holy crap what's going on? The Wild West in my neighborhood."

Police chased the man to San Pedro, where gunfire was exchanged again. The suspect, who was not hit by gunfire, was arrested and the child was taken into protective custody, police said.

An officer was taken to hospital for treatment to non-life threatening injuries from shattered glass during the shootout.
