Suspect Found Wounded Following Officer-Involved Shooting in Torrance

No officers were injured and it was unclear if the suspect was struck by the gunfire.

A knife-wielding suspect wounded Monday afternoon in an officer-involved shooting in Torrance escaped on foot and remained at large for several hours before being found.

Officers initially responded about 11:30 a.m. to reports of a suspect destroying property at a home in the 18800 block of Florwood, but the man was gone by the time they arrived, according to Torrance police Sgt. Ronald Harris.

Officers completed their vandalism investigation, but were called back to the home about 1 p.m. because the unidentified suspect had returned, Harris said.

"Shortly after the officers arrived, an officer-involved shooting occurred and the suspect fled the scene on foot," Harris said, adding that police were initially unsure whether the man had been wounded.

Officers set up a perimeter between 190th and 187th streets, from Prairie Avenue to Cordary Avenue.

The suspect was located about 5 p.m. and was being readied for a trip to a hospital, according to a report from the scene. His condition was not immediately available.

Residents had been urged to avoid the area as the search was underway.

No officers were injured, Harris said.
