Police Declare Street Funeral Gathering ‘Unlawful Assembly'

Police detained several individuals on Friday after declaring a funeral reception held on a street in South Los Angeles an unlawful assembly.

Police clad in riot gear responded to East 98th Street and South Avalon Boulevard just before sunset. Several people were seen being handcuffed by police.

The gathering was for the funeral after-party for Cassandra Brown, who died of cancer on Mother's Day. She was 47.

Her funeral was at a church near the street where LAPD ultimately declared an "unlawful assembly," police said.
