Officials Warn Canyon Fire 2 Victims of Potential Scams, Unlicensed Contractors

Those who lost their homes to the destructive Canyon Fire 2 blaze are being warned about the dangers of hiring unlicensed contractors who see the devastation of the fire as an opportunity to prey on victims.

The Contractors State License Board, California Department of Insurance and the Orange County District Attorney's Office have teamed up to protect the victims of Southern California's most recent fire by offering their guidance.

The CSLB's Statewide Investigative Fraud Team and the CDI will sweep neighborhoods affected by the fire to offer expertise to anxious homeowners who are eager to repair their homes.

By allowing unlicensed contractors to repair your home, homeowners risk financial loss and liability if a worker is injured and not covered by workers' compensation insurance.

The Canyon Fire 2 blaze began on Monday as a wind-driven brush fire and reached 8,000 acres at its peak. Although no deaths were reported, numerous structures were damaged and 13 houses were completely destroyed. The fire prompted evacuations and school closures.
