Capital Murder Charges Filed in Slayings of Long Beach Mother, Daughter

Prosecutors filed capital murder charges Tuesday against a 22-year-old Oklahoma man in the shotgun slayings in Long Beach of a 26-year-old woman and her 4-year-old daughter.

Brandon Ivan Colbert Jr. was charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder as well as special circumstance allegations of lying in wait and multiple murders, according to a Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office news release.

He's accused of hiding behind a sign and firing a shotgun, killing Carina Mancera and her daughter, Jennabel Anaya, on Aug. 6 as they were returning home from shopping, authorities said. Colbert also allegedly fired at the girl's father, Luis Anaya, who was not wounded, prosecutors said.

Colbert could face the death penalty or life in state prison without the possibility of parole, officials said. The decision whether to seek capital punishment will be made at a later date.

Police said Colbert boarded a Greyhound bus from Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Los Angeles on Aug. 3. He arrived in LA a day later.

Authorities said they'd like to speak with anybody who might have seen him on the bus. No motive has been determined.
