One Dead, Multiple Pets Injured as Car Crashes Into Mobile Home

The crash sparked a fire that killed the driver

One person died when a car hit a power pole and then crashed into a mobile home Saturday night in Los Angeles County.

The accident happened on the 1500 block of 135th Street in Gardena when the driver of a 2003 Volvo crashed through the power pole and then careened across Halldale Avenue, through a wooden fence and into a mobile home park, said Gardena police Sgt. Mark Thompson.

The crash sparked a fire that killed the driver and totally destroyed the home, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

The Volvo stopped "inside of a mobile home along with the power pole," Thompson said. "The vehicle and mobile home immediately became engulfed in flames."

A woman and her adult son were asleep inside the trailer, and suffered minor abrasions and burns. A neighbor suffered minor injuries while trying to rescue them and their pets, before police and firefighters arrived.

Several pets inside the home were also injured in the wreck, the LAFD said. Animal control was on the scene to tend to the injured pets, which included at least one cat and two dogs.

Authorities have not released the identity of the driver, nor what may have led up to the crash. The Gardena Police Department's Traffic Bureau asked anyone with any information regarding the crash to call them at 310-217-6189.
