Prius Driver Killed After Crashing With Garbage Truck on Ortega Highway

A man died Wednesday when a Prius and a trash truck collided on Ortega Highway near San Juan Capistrano.

The Prius driver was pronounced dead at the scene after being cut from the wreckage, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

The other driver suffered only minor injuries, according to the OCFA, which reported that the highway was closed in both directions.

The Prius may have crossed into the path of the oncoming truck, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.

Both vehicles went over the side of the highway, also known as state Route 74.

The crash was reported around 4:40 p.m. about 5 miles east of Interstate 5, authorities said.

CHP was investigating the crash.
