Nearly 3,000 flags are displayed across Pepperdine University's lawn in honor of those killed in the 9/11 attacks.
The "Waves of Flags" installation features 2,977 full-size flags — 2,877 American flags for each American life lost and 90 international flags representing the home countries of those from abroad who died on Sept. 11, 2001.
A group of more than 150 volunteers helped install the Alumni Park memorial on the Malibu campus Saturday afternoon.
"It's a moment of remembrance. Even though there was a lot of pain that day this is something that brings a lot of people joy," Pepperdine's Assistant Basketball Coach Delisha Milton-Jones told NBC4.
The tradition started in 2008 when the school's College Republicans group wanted to bring the tribute to the campus.
"This year Waves of Flags lands on the university’s day of service, Step Forward Day, creating a great opportunity for the Pepperdine community to come together and reflect on the events of 9/11," Doug Hurley, associate dean of students for Student Activities and Campus Recreation, said.
The university's ninth annual "Waves of Flags" installation is open to the public at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Canyon Road through Sept. 26.
