Police Fatally Shoot Man Who Killed Neighbor's Dog

Police responding to an armed robbery call shot and killed a man who allegedly broke into his neighbor's home in Long Beach Saturday and killed their dog.

Officers were sent about 3:55 p.m. to the 300 block of Cherry Avenue to investigate an armed residential robbery and once on scene were directed to the suspect's possible location, said Long Beach police Sgt. Bradley Johnson.

"Officers subsequently made contact with the suspect and an officer- involved shooting occurred," Johnson said.

The man was hit and died at the scene, Johnson said.

A knife was recovered at the scene, Johnson said.

The preliminary investigation revealed that for about the past 10 years, the suspect has been a neighbor of two victims who lived at the targeted residence, Johnson said.

They ran out of the home when the suspect entered and were not injured, but their dog was killed by the suspect, the sergeant said.

No officers were injured. The neighbors had no history of confrontation, Johnson said.
