Police Shoot, Kill Man in Moreno Valley

Deputies were initially investigating a family disturbance

Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man at an apartment complex adjacent to the Moreno Valley Mall, authorities said Sunday.

Deputies were investigating a family disturbance reported at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Stonegate at Towngate apartment complex in the 12600 block of Memorial Way, said Sgt. Chris Willison.

"The initial call for service detailed a male who was armed with a handgun and threatening family members," he said.

Brenda Walker, 61, told the Riverside Press-Enterprise her 23-year-old grandson from Los Angeles was visiting his mother and that he was flashing a gun, which prompted a witness to call the sheriff's department.

When deputies arrived at the apartment complex, they located the suspected gunman identified by family members and moments later shot him, Willison said.

Walker told the newspaper her grandson was shot multiple times in the chest. Deputies began life-saving efforts until paramedics arrived and transported the suspect to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries, according to Willison.

The suspect's name was not disclosed.

The officers involved, who were not identified, were placed on administrative leave per the department's policy, Willison said.
