Missing Riverside Police K-9 Found at Shelter

A Riverside police K-9 that went missing after escaping from its home early Monday was found safe at a shelter less than 24 hours later, officials said.

The Riverside Police Department said it received a call about 9 p.m. from a man who said he was looking at San Bernardino animal shelter website when he spotted the dog named Noran.

Someone dropped off the 5-year-old, 80-pound Belgian Malinois at the shelter after finding him in Grand Terrace, police said.

About midnight Monday, Noran went missing after his handler let him out of his kennel to allow him to relieve himself.

"The dog,for whatever reason, chose to climb over the fence and take off," said Riverside Police Lt. Mike Cook.

Noran had last been seen in the area of Via del Lago and Iris Avenue in Moreno Valley (map), police said.

A search team scoured nearby hills on horseback and off-road vehicles but couldn’t find him.

Noran is one of 10 Riverside police K-9s. He did not have a collar and was not chipped.
