IE Woman Allegedly Beaten to Death by Transient Son

A transient was arrested on suspicion of beating his mother to death in Rancho Cucamonga Wednesday, authorities said.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies received a report of a man beating a woman in a backyard in the 9700 block of Cerise Street at about 3:10 p.m., according to a sheriff's department news release.

The caller said the man left the scene on foot, and deputies located and took Angel Thomas Leyette, 23 and a transient, into custody, deputies said.

His 42-year-old mother, Xochilt Escobar, was found unresponsive at the home and pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said. Homicide investigators say Leyette was visiting Escobar when he allegedly repeatedly assaulted her in the upper body, an attack deputies said killed her.

Leyette was booked into the West Valley Detention Center and is being held without bail on suspicion of killing Escobar.

Investigators do not know what prompted the alleged beating and are asking anyone with information to call 909-387-3589.
