Son of ‘Real Housewives of Orange County' Star Arrested in Shooting

The son of a former "Real Housewives of Orange County" cast member was arrested Monday for allegedly shooting a Costa Mesa man and running from police, authorities said.

Joshua Waring, 27, of San Juan Capistrano was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, vehicle theft, felony evading, hit and run and assault and battery. His bail was set at $1 million.

Officers responded around 2:30 a.m. to a report of a gunshot victim in the 2900 block of Babb Street in Costa Mesa, said Lt. Paul Beckman of the Costa Mesa Police Department.

Officers found the victim, 35-year-old Daniel Lopez, had been shot in his lower torso and suffered serious injuries, Beckman said. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, Beckman said.

Witnesses at the scene identified Waring as the suspect in the shooting, Beckman said.

Authorities spotted the suspect driving a stolen white BMW sport utility vehicle in Santa Ana near Standard and McFadden avenues around 10:30 a.m., Beckman said.

When officers approached, the suspect sped off in the SUV, crashed and fled on foot near Fourth and Terminal streets, Beckman said.

The suspect attempted to hide inside a nearby business but surrendered to Santa Ana police after a brief standoff, Beckman said.

Officers recovered "evidence related to the attempted murder" from the SUV, but not the gun used in the shooting, Beckman said.

Waring's mother, Lauri Peterson, was a cast member of the Bravo documentary series "The Real Housewives of Orange County" from its debut in 2006 until 2008, when she left to deal with her son's problems, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Court records show Waring has pleaded guilty to misdemeanors including hit-and-run in 2008, battery in 2009, possession of drug paraphernalia in 2009 and resisting a peace officer and drug possession in 2015, the newspaper reported.

"As most of the viewers know, I have a son and he's had a lot of challenges," Peterson said in a 2015 interview with a reporter for a Bravo website covering its programming.

"He and his wife had a baby almost three years ago. He's really struggling and, well, they're both really struggling."

Peterson said in the interview that she and her husband had adopted Waring's then-3-year-old daughter.

Police urged anyone with information about the shooting to call Detective George Maridakis at (714) 754-5051.
