Car Flips After Hitting Pedestrian in Redondo Beach

A pedestrian was struck by a car Tuesday in Redondo Beach in front of witnesses who tried in vain to help save him.

The man was fatally injured about 11:40 a.m. at Torrance Boulevard and Francisca Avenue, the Redondo Beach Police Department reported. He was thrown into the cross street from the impact. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

The elderly woman who was behind the wheel of the white sedan, which plowed through a low wall and flipped onto its roof, was taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries, police said.

Police, who withheld the motorist's name and exact age, said she was conscious and able to speak with investigators after the crash.

She was driving west on Torrance Boulevard when, for unknown reasons, the car veered off the road and struck the pedestrian, who appears to have been on the sidewalk, police said. The sedan then went through the wall and overturned.

The crash closed Torrance Boulevard for several hours.
