$50,000 Reward Offered in Hit-and-Run Death of Mother of 6

Authorities Friday were hoping a $50,000 reward will generate tips that help them solve the hit-and-run death of a woman in the Harbor Gateway area of Los Angeles.

Veronica Hernandez, 45, was injured about 9:50 p.m. on Aug. 4 as she was collecting recyclables from a recycling container on Alondra Boulevard west of Orchard Avenue, and she died at a hospital, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The car was described as a dark, possibly gray, BMW 5-Series sedan, the LAPD reported.

"The (BMW) was eastbound on Alondra Boulevard at a high rate of speed when it passed a vehicle on the right at Orchard Avenue," an LAPD statement said. "As the BMW was passing on the right, it struck and killed ... Hernandez."

Hernandez, a mother of six, "was temporarily homeless" when she was fatally injured, the LAPD said.

Detectives and family members held a news conference Friday morning at the site where Hernandez was injured.

"We just want to bring justice," Hernandez's daughter-in-law, Jessica Mancia, said. "This is no way for her to have passed."

Mancia urged the suspect to surrender to police.

"If you're out there and you're listening, just have a little bit of remorse to bring peace ... to our family," Mancia said. "We love her very much, and we just miss her."

The reward was offered by the city for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the motorist. Anyone with information on the case was urged to call detectives at 424-298-7898, or 877-LAPD-247.
