SoCal Summer Job Fairs Offers Networking and Career Advancement For Vets and Military Families

Both job fairs will highlight opportunities for military spouses.

Southern California is hosting a couple of job fair events this summer to help veterans, transitioning military personnel, college students and reserve members and spouses find employment or advance their careers with various participating companies.

Recruiters from the public and private sectors on Thursday will conduct interviews and possibly make tentative job offers during the Riverside Veterans Job Fair. The four-hour event is slated to begin at 11 a.m. in the Riverside Municipal Auditorium and will involve 35 entities, according to Loveland, Ohio-based RecruitMilitary, which is sponsoring the fair.

RecruitMilitary's Event Director Adam O'Toole said past and current military personnel are appealing to employers because they offer specialized skills and discipline.

"Military veterans have a very distinct work ethic. They are taught to do a job correctly and stay there until it is done correctly," O'Toole said. "They often have to take initiative and lead, and they are trained to be the best they can be."

Exhibitors scheduled to be on hand include Allstate, First Command Financial Services Inc., Fresno County Sheriff's Department, Howard Industries, Medical Imaging Solutions, the Port of Long Beach, Riverside County Department of Human Resources, San Bernardino County Probation Department and Target.

The Inland Empire Military Hire Resource & Career Fair, in collaboration with U.S. Vets, is hosting its job fair on Friday, August 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Marriott, Columbia College, Goodwill Temps, the Veterans Service Office, and AAE Aerospace are among the hiring companies that will be present at the event.

The job fair will be hosted in the March Veterans Village at 15305 6th street, March Air Reserve Base, CA 92518. For more information, visit militaryinclusion.com or call 619-277-9099.

In addition to former servicemen and women, National Guard and military reserve personnel, both fairs will highlight opportunities for their spouses, according to organizers.

RecruitMilitary estimates the number of unemployed or under-employed military spouses nationwide stands at 600,000.

"The exorbitantly high unemployment rate of military spouses -- 25% -- (is) more than six times the national average ... (representing) the highest unemployment rate of any singular group in the U.S.,'' said RecruitMilitary spokeswoman Kelly Wagner.

Google's jobs search tool, designed specifically for military veterans, will be used as part of the recruitment process to assist military personnel and their spouses in exploring 8,000 remote work options in the RecruitMilitary database.
