Santa Monica Hit-and-Run Driver Strikes Man on Scooter

"The driver stopped and exited his vehicle (but) fled the scene prior to first responders arriving."

Santa Monica police were seeking the public's help to find the hit-and-run driver responsible for the death of a man who was struck by a car while riding a motorized scooter.

The crash occurred about 8:30 p.m. Friday in the 2700 block of Third Street, Santa Monica Police Lt. Saul Rodriguez said.

The 41-year-old man was taken to a hospital, where he died a short time later. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

"A preliminary investigation revealed that the male victim was riding a personally owned electric scooter southbound on Third Street when for unknown reasons he fell onto the roadway,'' Rodriguez said.

"As the victim remained on the roadway, he was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on Third Street,'' Rodriguez said. "The driver stopped and exited his vehicle (but) fled the scene prior to first responders arriving.''

The vehicle was described as an older-model, off-white or tan four-door sedan, possibly a Toyota Camry with possible damage to the front passenger's side.

The suspect was described as man, 30-40 years of age, 6-feet-2 inches tall, with a medium build. He had a shaved head or very short hair, and he wore prescription glasses.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call police at (310) 458-8954.
