Search Continues for Missing Swimmer Near Santa Monica

The man has been missing since Tuesday.

Authorities continued their search Thursday for a swimmer reported missing in the ocean near Santa Monica.

The swimmer was last seen from shore about 11 a.m. Tuesday near lifeguard tower nine, and authorities began a search for the unidentified man, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Lifeguard Division.

County lifeguards and U.S. Coast Guard personnel were involved in the initial effort, which included air support. High winds and rough seas prompted lifeguards to end dive operations around 2:20 p.m.

Tuesday, but the effort resumed again Wednesday morning and has continued off and on since then.

The search resumed at daylight Thursday, and included two Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department vessels and an Air 5 Rescue helicopter.

The operation involved about two dozen sheriff's divers, and included a search of the coastal region and surrounding area.

The sheriff's department remains in unified command with the fire department.
