School Police Officer Injured in Officer-Involved Shooting in Westlake District

A Los Angeles School Police Department sergeant was injured Friday in an officer-involved shooting in the Westlake district that left the suspect wounded.

The shooting occurred about 2:45 p.m. in the area of Third and Alvarado streets, according to school police Sgt. Julie Spry.

Los Angeles police said the officer-involved shooting occurred either before or right after the sergeant was struck by a vehicle driven by the suspect.

Spry confirmed that the officer was not shot. He suffered a broken leg when he was struck and run over by the suspect.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange said crews responded about 2:50 p.m. to a report of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision and ended up taking four people to a hospital, including the sergeant and the suspect, who was wounded when the sergeant opened fire.

All four patients, including the suspect, were hospitalized in good condition, according to Capt. Al Lopez, commanding officer of the LAPD's Rampart Station.

The woman was involved in a hit-and-run collision at Third and Bonnie Brae streets, then carjacked a pickup truck and was involved in a vehicle-pedestrian collision at Third Street and Union Avenue, where the encounter with the officer occurred.
