Broken Water Main Causes Sinkhole in Fire Department Training Center Parking Lot

A 16-foot sinkhole swallowed part of a parking lot in a Burbank Fire Department training center after a water line broke Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.

Firefighters were called out to the scene near Victory Boulevard and Ontario Street just after 5 p.m.

The rush of water flooded nearby residential streets and forced traffic detours. Some of the water entered the training facility, officials said.

Streets were blocked off as crews worked to shut down the main.

Children in the neighborhood seized the opportunity to play in the ankle-deep water, using boogie boards, inner tubes and their own bodies to float in the makeshift river.

'We actually went surfing this morning and we thought that was it, so driving back to the valley did not expect another session for the day, it was really nice," one parent said.

"We’re wasting a ton of water but as long we’re wasting we might as well have fun with it," a neighborhood resident said.

Sixty-nine homes along Ontario Street were without water as of Tuesday night. Officials said that the earliest water will be restored is Wednesday morning.
