Slaying in Alley Marks 24th Homicide of the Year for San Bernardino

A man was gunned down in a San Bernardino alley in the early Monday morning hours, bringing the city's number of homicides to 24 this year - 10 more than there were at this time last year, police said.

Officers in the San Bernardino Police Department parking lot say they heard a volley of gunfire about 3 a.m. A few blocks away from the station, they found a man suffering from gunshots wounds in an alley in the 700 block of North Street. He did not survive.

The man's identity has not been released because his family has not been notified of his death.

The slaying marked the two-dozenth for the suburb 60 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Investigators say they believe many of the killings are gang-related, but witnesses are often too scared to come forward with information because they fear retaliation.
