Southland Could See Near-Record High Temperatures by Week's End

Gusty winds will whip through mountain and valley areas of the Southland amid cool temperatures Monday, but a warming trend is getting under way, likely to produce fire weather and near-record highs by week's end, forecasters said.

Along with gusty winds, isolated rain or snow showers are expected Monday on the northern slopes of mountain ranges in Ventura and Los Angeles counties, with the exception of the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, according to a National Weather Service advisory.

The winds, which were below advisory level early Monday, will persist through Wednesday night, the advisory said.

But on Thursday, a strong upper high pressure system is expected to park itself near California and stay put through Sunday, "bringing an extended period of very warm and very dry weather, with periods of moderate offshore winds," it said.

"At this time, it appears there will be the potential for near-record temperatures soaring into the 90s on Friday and Saturday. This pattern certainly has the potential for critical fire weather condition later this week..."

NWS forecasts indicated a warming trend would start today, followed by a rise of a couple of degrees tomorrow, climaxing in temperatures on Friday reaching more than 20 degrees above today's.
