Sparkletts, Costco Sued in Child Scalding Incident

A lawsuit filed against Sparkletts Inc. alleges that a year-old Covina girl suffered third-degree burns over much of her body when a defective water dispenser delivered by the company shot scalding water onto her body.

The Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit also names as defendants DS Services of America, which also was allegedly responsible for the dispenser's delivery; Costco Inc., which allegedly leased the dispenser to the family; and Crystal Mountain, identified by the suit as the manufacturer of the device.

Representatives for Sparkletts and Costco could not be immediately reached for comment on the suit, which alleges strict liability and negligence and seeks unspecified damages.

The girl was injured last Dec. 29 when "a defective and dangerously designed water dispenser shot scalding water at her face, chest and stomach," the complaint alleges.

The suit filed last Friday alleges the dispenser was negligently developed and manufactured and unsafe for use by a consumer or bystander.
