Ethier did not start on Thursday and Friday to rest a bruised knee he suffered after hitting a foul ball off of it against the Giants on Wednesday.

"We've seen it 2 or 3 different times this year. When he gets a couple days off, he comes back really swinging well," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said of Ethier. "I think the days off really help him."

The Dodgers' offense was like an In-N-Out Burger menu in the top of the fourth inning when Ethier and Carl Crawford hit back-to-back doubles, putting the Dodgers ahead 1-0.

The Dodgers would add an insurance run in the top of the eighth when Joc Pederson knocked in Ethier for the game's second run.

Alex Wood did the rest from there. The 24-year-old who was acquired from the Atlanta Braves at the trade deadline had his best game in a Dodger uniform on Saturday, throwing a three-hitter over seven scoreless innings.

"It doesn't get much better than that," Wood said of his start. "We can see the light at the end of the tunnel in terms of making it to the post season. Things are starting to come together, tonight we pitched well, played good defense and had clutch hitting."

Wood (10-9) struck out four batters and stymied the Padres throughout the game.

"I had all three of my pitches going pretty good," Wood said. "Stuff wise, this was the best I've felt since I've been a Dodger."

Matt Kemp tallied two of the Padres three hits in the game, but he suffocated a San Diego rally in the sixth inning when Wood picked him off at first after a leadoff single.

"We had no outs and a runner on first, and all of a sudden two pitches later we're out of the inning," Mattingly said of Wood's game-changing moment. "He did an amazing job"

Wood followed with a strikeout of Justin Upton, which Wood believed was the turning point in the game.

"Arguably, their best hitter is up in Justin Upton," Wood said of his former Braves teammate. "I've seen him do a lot of pretty special things over the last two years in Atlanta."

Tyson Ross (10-10) was the hard-luck loser for the Padres allowing only one run on five hits in six innings.

"I didn't have my best stuff tonight, but I kind of grinded it out and just tried to keep us in there," Ross said of his start.

Kenley Jansen entered in the bottom of the ninth for the second straight game. This time, in a save situation, Jansen worked a perfect ninth for his 29th save of the season.

Game Notes:

Will Ferrell was at the game with his family. Ferrell played for both the Padres and Dodgers during a bizarre spring training day where Ferrell played 10 positions for 10 teams in one day. The HBO documentary of Ferrell's escapades, called "Ferrell Takes The Field," premiered after the game.

The sold out, capacity crowd of 43, 356 was comprised of mostly Dodger fans as the traditional lyric from Take Me Out To The Ballgame was changed to, "let's root, root, root for the Dodgers."
