    Alex Morgan, of Diamond Bar, scored twice to open Group G play against France.

    Southern California is sending more than 100 athletes to the London Olympics, and a few are in action during the opening weekend.

    Women's Soccer: United States vs. Colombia
    Diamond Bar native Alex Morgan has already scored two goals in a victory against France. Redondo Beach's Shannon Boxx was sidelined because of a hamstring injury.

    Women’s Basketball: United States vs. Croatia
    Chino's Diana Taurasi and the U.S. women have not lost in the Olympics for 20 years. Coach Geno Auriemma doesn't just want to win gold; he wants to win in style.  "We want to play a game that is pleasing to watch," Auriemma said. "Just winning won't be good enough for us to raise the bar."

    Tennis: Serena Williams vs. Jelena Jankovic
    Serena Williams will be back playing at Wimbledon after capturing the Grand Slam title at the All England Club earlier in the year. The Bryan brothers of Southern California also will compete in doubles. 

    Women's Beach Volleyball: Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Lee Walsh
    Two-time gold medal winners Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh will take to the sand to start their quest for a third straight gold.  May-Treanor has announced that the London Games will be her last.

    Boxing: Joseph Diaz Jr.
    South El Monte’s Joseph Diaz Jr. steps into the ring with a good chance of taking home gold in the men's bantamweight.  He is a two-time national champion in that weight class.

    Men's Basketball: United States vs. France
    The Lakers' Kobe Bryant joins ex-UCLA stars Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook, and Dominguez HS standout Tyson Chandler as the United States takes on France

    Beach Volleyball: Jennifer Kessy and April Ross, Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser
    The Orange County natives will make their Olympic debuts before Rogers and Dalhausser compete in qualifying matches.

    Shooting: Kim Rhode
    El Monte's Kim Rhode has a shot at becoming the first U.S. athlete in an individual sport to medal in five straight Olympics.

    Men's Water Polo: United States vs. Montenegro
    Long Beach's Tony Azevedo, Ryan Bailey and several Southern Californians lead Team USA against Montenegro.
