Ariza Avoids Suspension For Hard Foul

Late in the third quarter of the Lakers' blowout loss to the Blazers, Trevor Ariza went up to try to block a dunk attempt from Rudy Fernandez. If you watch things like SportsCenter, you might have seen it about 1000 times by now. Basically, Ariza caught Fernandez in the head, and caused him to fall awkwardly. Fernandez was on the ground for about 10 minutes, before being carried off on a stretcher.

Sounds serious, right? The thing is, it wasn't.

Ariza was whistled for the flagrant two and was ejected, which was probably appropriate at the time. As it turns out, Fernandez will be just fine, and, despite all the drama, his injury from the incident boils down to nothing more than a bruise.

The league seems to have a similar view of the play, as they've announced that Ariza will not be suspended for the hit on Fernandez.

However, Lamar Odom was suspended for one game for leaving the bench in the pushing match that followed the foul.
