Who won gold in ski jumping at the 2018 Winter Olympics?

Maren Lundby of Norway grabbed gold in the women’s individual large hill event, her first in her career. Norway’s men's large hill team also won the country gold, as Norway overtook Finland for the lead in gold medals in Olympic history with 11.

Poland’s Kamil Stoch became the oldest individual gold medalist in Olympic ski jumping, placing first in the men’s individual large hill event. Germany’s Andreas Wellinger won gold in the men’s individual normal hill competition, taking home his second ever gold medal.

Who is competing in ski jumping for Team USA at the 2022 Winter Olympics?

Team USA will send four ski jumpers to Beijing.

Kevin Bickner, Casey Larson and Patrick Gasienica are competing on the men’s side while Anna Hoffman is the lone American for the women.

Bickner, who hails from Wauconda, Ill., won the U.S. Olympic Ski Jumping trials in December. He competed in PyeongChang for the United States, finishing in 18th in the normal hill and 20th in the large hill and was also a member of the team event that finished in ninth. The 25-year-old is the U.S.’ best chance at a medal.

Larson also competed at the 2018 Olympics, finishing in 39th in normal hill and 53rd in the large hill. He comes from Barrington, Ill. Gasienica, a native of Chicago, is a first-time Olympian.

Originally, the U.S. had not qualified to send any women to the Olympics, with the team not performing well enough to get an outright Olympic berth. However, after two nations returned a quota spot and four of the top five alternate nations declined spots, Hoffmann was offered the spot.

Had Hoffmann, who comes from Madison, Wis., not been added, it would have been the first time the U.S. did not send any female ski jumpers.

Who are the best ski jumpers at the 2022 Winter Olympics?

Looking at the men’s side, Stoch has an opportunity for even more history in 2022. He has three career gold medals entering the Beijing Olympics and can tie, or pass, Matti Nykänen of Finland and Simon Ammann of Switzerland for the most gold medals in ski jumping history as each have four.

Stoch, as well as Wellinger, also have a shot at tying Nykänen’s record for most medals at the Olympics (five). Both Stoch and Wellinger have four total medals in their Olympic careers.

Norway’s Robert Johansson and Johann André Forfang, who made up half of the gold medal-winning large hill team in 2018, are eyeing their first individual gold medals. Johansson took bronze in both the individual large and normal hill in PyeongChang while Johansson won silver in the individual large hill.

A couple skiers looking for their first individual Olympic medals are Germany’s Karl Geiger, Poland’s Piotr Żyła and Austria Stefan Kraft. Geiger previously took home silver in 2018 with Germany in the team individual large hill. He won two gold medals in team events at the 2021 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships and took gold in the individual event at the 2020 FIS Ski Flying World Championships.

Żyła is the reigning world champion in the individual normal hill for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships and is looking for revenge after not competing in any events in PyeongChang despite making the Polish team. Kraft, who holds the ski flying world record, is the reigning world champion in the individual large hill and looking to build off a subpar 2018 Winter Games.

On the women’s side, Lundby will be back again on the Olympic stage looking to defend her gold medal in the women’s individual normal hill. She just medaled in all four categories she competed in during the 2021 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, including gold in the individual large hill.

Japan’s Sara Takanashi provides some of the strongest competition for Lundby. She won bronze in 2018 in the individual normal hill and medaled in both individual events at the 2021 World Championships, finishing behind Lundby in both.

At only 23 years old, Slovenia’s Ema Klinec could make waves on the hills in Beijing. She became Slovenia’s first female ski jumping world champion after winning the normal hill event at the 2021 World Championships, and took home a silver in the women’s team normal hill. Despite Slovenia holding the most medals at the Youth Olympic Games, that hasn’t translated to the Winter Olympics, where the country does not have a gold medal in ski jumping to date. That could all change with Klinec.

What country has the most medals in ski jumping?

Norway not only has the most gold medals in Olympic history, but holds the record for most medals with 35. After taking over the gold count in 2018, the country now has the most gold, silver and bronze medals as well.

Austria is in second with a total of 25 medals. Finland is in third with 22 total. The United States have earned just one medal in ski jumping, a bronze medal won by Anders Haugen in 1924.
