Newsmakers in the NHL: Ducks Win Game, Lose Teemu Selanne

Costly win of sorts for the Ducks on Friday, as they lost Teemu Selanne to a leg injury in the first period when it appeared his own skate cut his left leg. He was helped off the ice and didn't return to the game. If he's out for any extended period of time it would obviously be a tremendous blow to Anaheim's offense, as the 38-year old forward leads the team in goals (14) and is third on the team in points (27).

As for the game itself, Anaheim took it, 3-2, in a shootout, thanks to some stellar goaltending from Jonas Hiller, who stopped 51 shots in regulation and overtime, and all three shots he faced in the shootout. The 51 saves actually matched a franchise record, so, way to go Jonas.

The Ducks special teams provided the offense, as Rob Neidermeyer picked up a shorthanded goal with 20 seconds to play in the first period, while Corey Perry notched a power play goal midway through the second period, giving the Ducks a 2-0 lead.

That lead would hold up until the third, when Kyle Brodziak put Edmonton on the board at the 6:32 mark, while Erik Cole tied the game seven minutes later with a power play goal.

Perry scored the only goal in the shootout, giving Anaheim the win.

The Rest of the Action

... Patrick Elias scored twice for the white-hot Devils, as they rolled to a 5-1 win over Ottawa. Brian Gionta, Johnny Oduya and Travis Zajac also scored for New Jersey, as Scott Clemmensen stopped 24 shots. Ottawa has lost four of its past five, and Craig Hartsburg's attempt to shuffle his lines and boost the teams offense was, for one night anyway, a flop. Jarkko Ruutu scored the Senators' only goal, a shorthanded tally in the second period.

... The Islanders extended their losing streak to eight games on Friday -- they've also lost 10 of 11 -- with a 4-1 loss at Minnesota. Richard Park gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead in the second period, before Minnesota scored four consecutive goals, including three in the third period.

... It took Chicago's Duncan Keith 23 seconds to notch the game-winning tally in overtime, helping lead the Blackhawks to a 3-2 win in Calgary. Patrick Kane scored his 15th goal of the season in the win, while Nikolai Khabibulin turned aside 32 shots.

... Ryan Miller picked up his third shutout of the season by stopping 40 shots in a 5-0 win over Los Angeles. The Sabres were nearly doubled up in the shots department (40-22) but Los Angeles' Jason LaBarbera allowed four goals on just 14 shots, before being lifted early in the third period.

Roster Moves Before the Holiday Roster Freeze

... One of these days the Tampa Bay Lightning will make a roster move that actually makes sense. On Friday, the Lightning placed forward Jussi Jokinenon waivers, because, well, it had been about 48 hours since they previously did something with their roster. Jokinen's not a star by any means, but he's a solid player -- in a slump at the present time -- that's a solid bet to score 15 goals a year. Obviously, not a cornerstone guy you build around, but is he a player you would simply place on waivers for anyone to claim? Not even able to find somebody to give up a draft pick? What's the point, Tampa Bay?

... The Pittsburgh Penguins made a pair of roster moves. The first of which was the announcement that center Max Talbot signed a two-year contract extension. Talbot's having a down year, but is still a tremendous role-player. It's also good new for A & L Motors in Pittsburgh, who have used Talbot's incredible (and I mean INCREDIBLE) acting skills two years in a row.

... The Penguins also sent minor league forward Jonathan Filewich to St. Louis for a conditional sixth-round draft pick in 2010. At one point he was among the Penguins' top forward prospects, but he's been somewhat of a disappointment the past year-and-a-half and could use a fresh start in another organization. Won the fastest skater competition at the AHL All-Star game a few years ago. It's a real blockbuster, I know.
