Chargers Submit Landscape, Grading Plans for OC Training Site, Team HQ

The Chargers have a year to decide whether they plan to join the Rams in the Los Angeles area

The San Diego Chargers submitted development plans this week for land in Orange County that would serve as the team's interim headquarters and training site if the team moves to the Los Angeles area.

No final decision has been made regarding relocation, but the move adds another piece of groundwork for a possible move. Earlier this month, NFL owners voted to give the Chargers a year to decide whether they plan to join St. Louis in a move to the LA area.

In a statement released Thursday, the team said it is "continuing to review all of its options."

A move would likely mean a shared stadium arrangement for the Rams and Chargers. The Rams will begin playing at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum this fall and remain there until a new stadium in Inglewood is ready in time for the 2019 season.

Rams owner Stan Kroenke is behind the stadium project in Inglewood.

The plans submitted this week to the city of Santa Ana for the 5-acre site involve grading and landscape proposals. Santa Ana is about 40 miles south of Inglewood.

"It was necessary for the team to submit the grading and landscape plans now because of the long lead time necessary to secure land use approvals and to prepare the natural grass practice fields in time for the team's offseason workout schedule," according to the team's statement.

Also Thursday, the Coliseum's commission began considering a modification to a lease agreement with USC that would allow two NFL teams to play at the historic stadium. The current lease allows one NFL team to share the Coliseum with the Trojans football team.

The Chargers also applied this month to trademark the names "LA Chargers" and "Los Angeles Chargers." The trademark applications would cover a wide range of products, such as football helmets, golf balls, mobile apps, decorative magnets, calendars, clothing and jewelry.

If the Chargers choose not to move to Los Angeles, the Oakland Raiders have a one-year option to consider a move.

The Chargers, among the original eight American Football League teams, have a brief history in Los Angeles -- the franchise moved to San Diego after one season in LA, playing home games at the Coliseum.

The Los Angeles area has not had an NFL team since 1994. Following conclusion of that season, the then-Anaheim Stadium-based Rams moved to St. Louis and the Raiders returned to Oakland after calling the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum home from 1982-94.
