Extreme skier Shane McConkey was killed jumping off a cliff while filming a movie in Italy. He was 39 years old.
His sponsor Red Bull says McConkey was on a ski-BASE jump when he had a mid-air malfunction.
McConkey lived and trained at Squaw Valley's Olympic Village in Lake Tahoe. He founded the International Free Skiiing Association and won several national and international skiing competitions including the X Games and World Extreme Skiing Championships. Powder magazine readers voted him skier of the year three times.
McConkey is survived by his wife Sherry and 3-year old daughter Ayla.
