Wednesday's men's gymnastics individual all-around final came down to the final event, and it was Japan's Daiki Hashimoto who emerged on top. It is the third straight Olympic gold in the event for the host country, as Kohei Uchimara won the event at both the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

Through five rotations of competition, China's Xiao Ruoteng had control of the lead. He claimed the silver medal after Hashimoto leapt up the standings in the final rotation.

Russian Olympic Committee’s Nikita Nagornyy earned bronze, while China's Sun Wei just missed out on a medal in fourth place.

All four gymnasts were within .601 points of each other going into their final rotation. Hashimoto was the last one in the group to compete and posted highest horizontal bar score of the day with a 14.933.

While Nagornyy entered the Olympics as the gold medal favorite in the men’s individual all-around, Hashimoto pulled off an upset in his home country. Hashimoto also posted the highest score in the qualifying round with a 88.531, edging out Nagornyy’s 87.897.

For Team USA, Brody Malone finished with total score of 84.465, while Sam Mikulak had a score of 83.164.

Here is how they fared in each event:

Brody Malone

Pommel horse: 14.100
Rings: 13.833
Vault: 14.366
Parallel bars: 13.466
Horizontal bar: 14.400
Floor: 14.300

Sam Mikulak

Pommel horse: 13.566
Rings: 13.533
Vault: 14.533
Parallel bars: 14.966
Horizontal bar: 13.633
Floor: 12.933

Mikulak did the best of any American man in the individual all-around at the 2019 world championships, where he placed seventh. The 28-year-old, who said he would retire after the Olympics, has just one individual event left in his gymnastics career. He will compete in the men's parallel bars final at 4 a.m. ET on Aug. 3.

Gymnast Sam Mikulak is a high-flying act on the horizonal bar, also known as the "high bar." But can he find success explaining the event using Legos?

Malone's last event in Tokyo will be the horizontal bar final, which will also take place on Aug. 3.
