Student Calls School's “Battle of Sexes” Sexist

Some say "The Battle of Sexes," a tradition that pits boys against girls at a high school in Whittier, got out of hand.

The controversy began at an assembly at a La Serna High School where students put up images of powerful presidents on the boys' side and bikinis, lipstick and a diamond on the girls' side.

The images didn't go over well with Mindy Pflug, a senior who took to Twitter by saying, "I am beyond appalled."

"I just walked in and felt a pit in my stomach," she said. "I thought about all the things that have happened to women — gender equality."

The gender discussion and reaction to what she tweeted got heated at school.

But her family and girlfriends are standing by her side.

Mindy has been harassed online for speaking out. Mindy says that's why this discussion on gender equality and sexism needs to stay alive.

A male student, Connor Garzon, agrees as he mentioned his female role models — Marie Curie and Anne Frank.

He said the merit-versus-appearance-based images between men and women are unfair and hopes women know it.

"You are just as important as a man and, if so, maybe more," he said.
