Man Tries to Lure Girl Into Bathroom by Offering Her a Treat: Police

Editor's note: This story was updated Thursday to reflect that a suspect has been detained the day after the story aired.

A man suspected of trying to lure a 6-year-old girl into a Food 4 Less restroom in Riverside in an encounter caught on camera was detained and questioned Thursday.

Theodore Childers was questioned Thursday in connection with the Feb. 15 incident, police said.

Police released surveillance video Wednesday showing a man trying to lure a girl into the grocery store restroom in the Inland Empire.

The 6-year-old girl is seen on surveillance walking toward the restroom inside the Food 4 Less on Chicago Avenue when a man tries to lure her toward him "by telling her he would give her a treat," police said.

The surveillance video shows the man motion for the girl while he stands near the entrance to the men's restroom.

The girl, who was at the store with her grandmother, was not hurt.

Shoppers however, told NBC4 they're still stunned and disturbed by the footage.

"It's a little girl. What was he planning on doing?" asked Sami Lara, a shopper and concerned mother. "That's the only thing I'm thinking ... what was he planning on doing?"

Although the incident happened weeks ago, police released the footage Wednesday because they'd run out of leads at that point.

Anyone with additional information about the incident is asked to contact Detective C. Olivas with the Riverside Police Department at 951-353-7136.
