Man Fatally Shot When Deputies Open Fire in Watts

A man was killed after being struck by gunfire from deputies Wednesday night in Watts.

No deputies were injured in the shooting, which was reported about 7:15 p.m. in the 1300 block of 115th Street, according to Deputy Lisa Jansen of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

Officials were patrolling the are near Imperial Highway and Slater Avenue when they noticed a suspicious vehicle parked on the wrong way of the street. When deputies approached a man standing outside the vehicle, the man ran, according to Deputy Trina Schrader of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

The man was allegedly armed with a firearm, prompting deputies to pursue him, officials said. A handgun believed to have belonged to the man was located at the scene.

His family insisted the man was unarmed and was holding his trousers during the chase.

After being struck once, the man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was identified only as a man in his 30s.
