SUV Driver Arrested After Driving Through Gate and Vehicle-to-Vehicle Shooting

Officers chased the SUV driver, who crashed into a mobile home park's iron gate

The driver of a sport utility vehicle was arrested in connection with a vehicle-to-vehicle shooting, after he went on a driving rampage and rammed the gate of a mobile home community early Friday.

Police have identified the man as Anthony Poe, who was booked into jail Friday after being released from the hospital.

The violence began when a couple traveling in a Porsche Panamera were shot at by the suspect driving a black SUV 9th Street and Western Avenue in San Pedro around 10 p.m. The couple followed the SUV trying to get its license plate number, but pulled over when they saw LAPD.

The suspect continued driving and crashed through a large iron gate to a private golf and mobile home community in Rancho Palos Verdes.

"That's solid, I wouldn't have expected it to go down as easily as it apparently did," said community resident Jim Webb.

"I changed my clothes and raced down here in the golf cart, and there was probably 20, 25 policemen with guns drawn, machine guns etcetera," said David Phillips, another resident.

Phillips added that police told him to stay behind a protective fence while they waited with guns drawn in case the driver returned.

Officers in a police helicopter spotted the SUV driver after he crashed into a second gate separating the community from a nature reserve. The driver got out of the SUV and was taken into custody.

A gun was found nearby, police said.

No one was injured in the shooting.

"We can fix fences and do all that kind of stuff, that's no big deal, but lives are the most important thing," Phillips said.
