Long Beach Same-Sex Couple Hopes to Take Wedding Viral

A Long Beach couple is pleading for the public to take their wedding viral in light of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn California’s ban on gay marriage.

Now the message is spreading via social media as the first local couple to use crowdfunding for a same-sex wedding.

“Four years ago we began our life together in hopes that one day we’d be able to get married. And now …that dream is finally a reality,” said Miguel Munoz Topete Hernandez in a video sent to NBC Los Angeles.

Cesar Hernandez-Topete and Miguel Munoz Topete Hernandez celebrated with thousands of same-sex couples across California when the gay marriage ban was lifted last month.

They ran out to obtain a marriage license, the couple wrote on their page.

Then came the next big problem – funding their nuptials.

Finding inspiration in social media, the couple created a page on the crowd-funding site www.GoFundMe.com to finance their quaint $2,500 wedding.

The couple also revealed that the money will go toward another dream.

"Miguel and I are currently in the process of adopting a child and it’s definitely something we’ve wanted for a very, very long time," Hernandez-Topete said in a video sent to NBC Los Angeles. "Now we have two things on our plate: a wedding and an adoption."

The couple met over a "dinner date" four years ago, according to their page.

That dinner led to a domestic partnership on July 13, 2012 and a years-long fight against Prop 8.

The wedding is set for Sept. 20 in order to make the 90-day expiration date, the couple told NBC4's Mekahlo Medina.

The couple is sweetening the deal by offering incentives for donations to their campaign.

Donations over $25 will receive cake pops on the house from www.CakePopsand Company.com – Hernandez-Topete’s business.
