Teen's Horse Dies After Stepping on Electrified Water

A transformer fire led to the electrocution of a horse Monday in Lake View Terrace.

A father and his teenage son riding horses in the 10900 block of Foothill Boulevard, near Hansen Dam Park, around 7:30 p.m., continued towards the site of fire, despite warnings from firefighters to move away, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The horse the boy was riding walked into electrified water and was killed, according to reports from the scene.

"When that horse felt the electrical shock, it went down onto its two front legs," LAFD Capt. Eric Scott said. "Fortunately, the boy was able to dismount to the right on a sidewalk to safety."

The boy did not appear to be seriously injured, Stewart said.

The fire caused about 1,000 Department of Water & Power customers to lose power.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
