Toddler Struck by Round From Gun Being Cleaned by Father

The girl was in an upstairs bedroom when her father was downstairs cleaning the gun, according to authorities

A 2-year-old girl in an upstairs bedroom was struck by a bullet discharged from a gun that her father was cleaning downstairs late Wednesday in Apple Valley, according to the the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

The girl, who suffered a gunshot wound to her stomach, was airlifted to St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach. Police said the girl is out of surgery and in the Intensive Care Unit.

The shooting took place around 11:30 p.m. in the 16100 block of Viho Road.

"Deputies were advised that the child’s father was downstairs cleaning a gun when he negligently discharged his handgun which struck the child in an upstairs bedroom," according to a statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

No arrests were reported Thursday morning.
