“Cajon Crawl” Lane Closures Might Slow Drive on 15 Freeway

Lane closures will affect the freeway between 10 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Monday for the next five weekends

Drivers heading north out of the Inland Empire near Cajon Pass will encounter up to 45-minute travel delays on the 15 Freeway all weekend for road work.

The "Cajon Crawl" will begin 10 p.m. Friday and last until 3 p.m. Monday for the next five weekends as Caltrans closes lanes to repave the road, Caltrans Spokeswoman Terry Kasinger said.

The lane closures only affect the northbound 15 Freeway, the main road people take for a weekend trip to Las Vegas. It will be reduced to three lanes in the daytime and two at night, with no shoulder. Friday's closure begins at Highway 138 and closures will move uphill toward Oak Hill in one-mile stretches each weekend.

Caltrans expects the heaviest traffic between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and urges drivers to schedule their travel around those times as there are no alternate routes in the area, Kasinger said.

She also advised people to drive safely, be patient and make sure their cars are in good running condition.

"We're hoping nobody breaks down," Kasinger said. "Be aware that it's difficult for emergency responders to get in there once we do have an incident."
