A big rig hauling yams caught fire on the southbound 5 Freeway in Glendale Thursday, closing southbound lanes.
The big rig stopped on the roadside, just south of Western Avenue at 2:30 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball. The fire and lane closures were just north of the interchange with the Ventura (134) Freeway.
The big rig that caught fire was hauling about 50,000 pounds of yams, Kimball said. The Department of Transportation requested an extended closure at the fire location for vegetable cleanup, according to the CHP.
No injuries were reported.
