Freight Train Hits SUV in Camarillo, Killing 1

A train collided with an SUV in Camarillo Thursday morning, killing the vehicle's driver, authorities said.

The collision occurred near the intersection of Las Posas Road and 5th Street at about 8:30 a.m., according to the Ventura County Fire Department. Train tracks run parallel to that section of 5th Street.

A 2014 Ford Explorer pulled across the tracks, where it was hit by an eastbound freight train, according to the California Highway Patrol. The SUV was thrown from the tracks, coming to rest in a dirt road.

None of the three people on the freight train, which was hauling lumber, were hurt, according to CHP spokesman David Webb. The driver of the SUV was a 35-year-old man.

He was pronounced dead on scene, fire officials said.

It was unclear if crossing lights were working, but the cause of the crash was under investigation. The road was expected to stay closed for several hours, Webb said.
