Families Rush Out of Burning Apartment After Good Samaritans' Warning

Families and tenants rushed out of an apartment complex early Wednesday after two good Samaritans frantically warned everyone that the structure was on fire.

The good Samaritans pounded on front doors at 1:15 a.m. to alert sleeping neighbors of the blaze. A 57-year-old man suffered burn injuries and a 30-year-old woman was hospitalized with smoke inhalation following a raging fire that scorched a two-story North Hollywood apartment.

The flames were reported coming from the 50-foot-by-100-foot building at 7423 N. Lankershim Blvd. at 1:13 a.m., said Amy Bastman of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The blaze was knocked down by 87 firefighters in 38 minutes, she said.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that the inferno began in a garage area. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
