1 Pedestrian Killed, Another Injured By Suspected Drunken Driver Who Crashed Into Doughnut Shop

A man driving a minivan suddenly veered off the road in Westlake, fatally injuring one pedestrian and critically wounding another before it slammed into a Winchell's Donut House.

It happened about 3:25 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Beverly and Alvarado boulevards, according to the Los Angeles fire and police departments.

The alleged DUI driver struck two male pedestrians who were critically injured and were now in grave condition, fire department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

The deceased victim died at a hospital, Sgt. J. Brown said.

A witness identified the victim as a friend of hers -- a man named "David" who loved reading books.

The surviving pedestrian was hospitalized in critical condition.

The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety will determine the structural safety of the Winchell's, Humphrey said.
